What is happiness? Many could argue that the feeling is arbitrary. Scientifically however, the feeling we call “happiness” is triggered by 4 main hormones that our bodies release naturally. Let’s go through each one along with tips on how to release them.

What are the 4 happiness hormones?

1. Dopamine

Dopamine is the pleasure hormone. It is tied into the reward center of our brain, and is therefore activated when we feel a sense of accomplishment. You can give yourself a quick hit of dopamine by setting yourself a small goal, and achieving it.

Tips:

  • Do a small chore you’ve been putting off.
  • Make your bed in the morning.
  • Develop a routine to follow, such as waking up and having your meals at the same time each day.

2. Endorphins

Endorphins provide you with a sense of well-being. It reduces pain and helps in dealing with stress. Endorphins are released with laughter. Often associated with runner’s high, endorphins can also be released with being active, especially when you have group interactions.

  • Put on some music and have a dance break
  • Watch a comedy

3. Oxytocin

Often referred to as the “love” hormone. Oxytocin is actually a bonding hormone. Though we may associate oxytocin with physical affection, it is not necessary to have a partner to get our bodies to release it. There are many ways we can express love!

Tips:

  • Do an activity or hobby you love, whether it’s playing an instrument, making crafts, or learning a new recipe.
  • Spend time with your pets.
  • Call a friend, show your love and gratitude for them or simply give them a compliment!
  • Express self love through meditation, journaling, or giving yourself a mini at-home spa day.

4. Serotonin

Serotonin is a mood-stabilizer. It reduces our worries and anxiety. We can boost our serotonin levels by staying active and working on our mindsets.

Tips:

  • Get some sunlight. Go on a walk outside, or pack some lunch to have at a park.
  • List 5 things you are grateful for today.
  • Start a small garden or water your plants.

There are many little things you can do, that when doing them consistently, can make a huge impact on your life and how you feel. Remember, everyone is different. Use these tips as a guide and find what works for you! Prioritize your well-being and be consistent– happiness is within reach.
